A dream about a gorilla

"I don't remember very much of my dream, just that I was walking through a tropical paradise with a friend of a friend. We came around a big rock, and as we were walking around it we saw someone juggling. As we got closer, I realized that the person juggling was actually a male gorilla, and he was juggling four peaches. What the hell could that possibly mean??" - Anonymous

Thank you for this interesting little piece of a dream! To decode it, we'll have to look at some of the accepted meanings for the various symbols, like the tropical setting, the gorilla and the peaches, as well as the action of juggling.

To dream that you're in a tropical paradise may simply reflect a desire to get away from it all. It may also indicate that you're not looking at your situation realistically, but the addition of the action of juggling would suggest that you need a vacation. Dreams about juggling are often in reference to us having "too many balls in the air." This type of dream would suggest that your life is becoming unbalanced, and I can easily hazard the guess here that the gorilla is a stand-in for your basic personal needs. I agree with the assertion that you are everyone in your dreams, at least in an instance of passive observation such as this one, so a gorilla is a natural placeholder here for your more wild, primitive self.

Finally, the peaches. To a voracious omnivore like a gorilla, a rich juicy peach is quite a prize. To be juggling four of them rather than gorging himself with them would suggest that the gorilla (aka your more basic, primate self) is undertaking a complex act of self-control.

Looking at these elements in conjunction with one another, I think it's safe to say that your dream reflects a desire to escape the rigorous and complicated demands being placed on your person at this time. Additionally, it's a call to return to what is important to you, and an urge to satisfy your physical and emotional needs.

Dreams of Wolves, Comets and Balls. Yes, I said balls.

"I dreamt a comet was flying above my house in an easterly direction and then it landed in front my house in the opposite direction from which it was going.

I then dream that a black wolf was outside my house and i went to feed him raw meat and he almost attacked me but i got away. I had a white kid(baby goat) outside my house and i felt that the wolf would attack it so i took it inside and gave it a bath and then I dropped her outside and she ran into this circular cage my dad was building and started running around in circles happily.

Then I dream a big ball of fire in the sky was coming towards me and the closer it got to me the smaller the flame became and eventually it turned into a ball of light and it went into me.. I really can not remember how I felt when I had those dreams.. I guess I was trying to remember all the part of the dream which took away from really having any particular feeling." -Astor

Thank you for these dreams, I suspect that there are some very interesting things behind the strong symbols that you've been dreaming about.

Of all the celestial bodies, comets have a unique pull for us all. Perhaps this is because we know that their orbits sometimes intersect with our planet, creating a danger that can literally fall out of the sky and burn us alive. A comet can be a sign that you need to change your priorities or free yourself from the past. Additionally, the direction East, if one is oriented facing North, is to your right, so to head east is literally to head in the 'right' direction. The sudden shift from east to west can indicate that moving forward does indeed mean leaving behind the old and embracing the new.

The interplay of the wolf and the kid reflects an under current of sinister sexuality in your life. The Black Wolf is a hostile or aggressive force, and the White Kid is symbolic of an innocent form of playful sexuality. In the dream, you're treating the kid as if she's your baby, protecting her from the danger of the lurking, carnivorous wolf, and then cleansing her after she's been exposed to him. Your father is quite naturally your protector, and here this protection comes in the form of a circular pen that will contain and protect the pure, white, helpless little kid. Once she is safely enclosed, the kid plays happily.

Fire is an element of both destruction and creation. Consider the sun, which is the source of all life on our planet- it's basically a fireball in the sky. The fireball heading for you is the destruction of something old, and as it nears you it becomes a ball of light, a source of illumination that is perhaps divine.

From the interplay of these images, I would suggest that you're in a time of personal growth and transition. I hope that this free dream interpretation has been helpful, and please feel free to let me know any thoughts you may have.

Nightmares

"I've been having strange dreams for the past 2 or 3 nights now and wondered what they mean if anything. Firstly, I had a dream that I was asleep but dreamt that I went to the toilet and got attacked by a ghost, of whom I did not recognise, I don't think the ghost had a face, and then I suddenly woke up for real with a desperate urge to go to the toilet, however I was too scared so tried to go back asleep.

Ive also dreamt that I was at work when a shooting took place and I ran into the back room to try and avoid the danger, yet some how ended up in the middle of it. Then I was in some kind of hilly wasteland with 3 other people, 1 being a woman driving some sort of jeep, one being a woman screaming and one being a big guy slowly walking towards us with a big knife. The woman claimed that he raped her and now he was coming after me. I ended up hiding behind a big empty container, when the woman in the jeep pulled up next to me and told me to get in, I looked at the guy and then ran and jumped into the jeep, to which we drove off with him following and him trying to jump onto the vehicle." - Felicia

Thank you for your fascinating dreams! I think you've got a lot going on under the surface here, so I'll dive right in.

Dreaming of ghosts can signify simply a fear of death, which is a pretty universal fear among the living. Ghosts can also represent a disconnection from society, and since your ghost was faceless I would have to assume that the fear you felt in your dream is a fear of disconnecting with society at large. If you're struck with the need to use the bathroom while sleeping, it's very likely that the sensation of a full bladder will interject itself into your dream and will wake you up. Some very good dream dictionaries will also say that dreaming that you need to use the bathroom can be an indication that you're holding something back in your everyday life- since you actually needed to go, I would assume that we're dealing with the former here rather than the latter.

However, the second dream is both fascinating and terrifying. I suspect that you work in a place that causes a lot of turmoil in your life. Having a dream of being shot at often reflects the feeling that you're being taken advantage of in some way; it can also indicate a painful confrontation. Hiding in your dreams can often indicate that you are withholding something from someone you fear, or that you have a secret you're trying to contain.

In fleeing from the danger of the work place shooting, you wind up in a hilly wasteland. Climbing hills in your dreams is a reflection of struggle in your daily life, and dreaming that you wind up safely on top of a hillside is quite a different outcome than what you're describing here. Simply put, you leave the dangers of the shooting and find yourself in a place of intense struggle, and soon you're being chased by a man with a knife. Knives as often symbols of masculine aggression, and the fact that your are in danger of being raped by the man carrying the knife supports that symbolism.

I think it's important to pay attention to the woman who saves you from that situation. I'm guessing that because you do not specifically mention her identity, she is not a real person. Perhaps, if you think deeply about her you can recall something about her appearance, her attributes or the way that she rescues you that will lead you back to her significance. Perhaps there is a person in your life whom she represents who can help guide you through the difficult situations that are generating the anxiety reflected by your dream.

she's got legs, and she's dreaming about them!

"I dreamt that someone was caressing my legs. The person was faceless. I only remember hands on my legs (which didn't really look like my own legs in real life) and someone remarking about how smooth they were. The hands seemed to be coming from down below, and like I said, I could not see the person's face. I don't even know whether they were male or female, but I suspect that they were female. In waking life, I never show off my legs. In fact, I never even wear shorts or skirts because I hate my legs.
Is this totally sexual? I have no idea what this means really. Thanks!" - EM, Los Angeles

Thanks for submitting your dream for an interpretation, EM!

I think there are a few things to think about when considering the meaning of this dream. First of all, as we've discussed in previous posts, the legs are the literal connection of a person to the ground. They are the limbs that allow us to get where we are going, and so they have the power to represent the way that a person moves through the world.

On this very literal level, we could say that this dream is about you getting to where you'd like to be in life. The act of having your legs stroked and praised might signify an appreciation for your method of getting things accomplished.

Similarly, I think that this dream might be a cue from your subconscious not to be so hard on yourself. You mention above that you 'hate' your legs and that you refrain from wearing clothing that shows them as a result. Is it possible that you're being a little hard on yourself? The image that your brain has provided for the dream is an ideal form of the body part, how far are you, realistically, from your ideal self? When considering the metaphor of legs as the way of getting things done in your life, is it possible that you're being too hard on yourself?

As for the dream being sexual, sure, it could be a little sexual, if it felt sexy at the time. Dreams have a way of taking really mundane activities and applying more titillating experiences to them, at least in my experience. It's also possible that all three of these elements are working together to provide you with a bigger message. The image of a pair of idealized legs being praised and stroked in a sexually pleasurable way could equate to an optimistic view of the way that you're moving through the world. Perhaps what you're moving towards is a little sexy time!!!
